The Namibian Chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Namibia, has expressed its heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the entire family of Zimbabwean journalist, Farayi Albert Munyuki, who passed away on Monday, July 30, at the age of 67.
He died at his home in the Zimbabwean town of Gweru, and leaves two sons and four daughters.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but it is expected he will be laid to rest in Gweru. Munnyuki was popular for his column ‘Farayi on Friday’ in Namibia’s New Era daily.
Chairperson of MISA Namibia, Christof Maletsky, says the media fraternity in both Namibia and Zimbabwe has lost someone who was very resourceful to many young, upcoming colleagues.
“I know of several colleagues who have gone through his training and have become household names in Namibia. They shall continue to be deeply indebted for the sacrifices he made for them,” Maletzky said.
Munyuki was the first black editor of The Herald newspaper in Zimbabwe, editor-in-chief of the Zimbabwe News Agency (Ziana), editor at the Times of Zambia, editor of the Zambia Daily Mail, editor at the Weekender in Zambia, lecturer at a South African jounalism training institute and a trainer at the Namibia Press Agency in the early 1990s.
