WINDHOEK-Ever since Salmi Magano Nambinga scooped the title of Miss Katutura Epxo earlier this month, she has grown a huge mentality for helping vulnerable children kids and is more than eager to continue with her plans.

Growing up, Salmi says she has always wanted to go out in the community and do various charity work and help those who cannot help themselves.  “I plan to do community activities and joint ventures with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and the Namibia Red Cross Society (NRCS), to help the most vulnerable people in the society. I would also like to encourage young people to become volunteers by visiting the Red Cross Society office and start giving back to the community,” says Salmi. She adds that cancer has been a leading cause of many deaths in Namibia, therefore she would like to create an awareness of the necessary steps that can be taken in living a healthy lifestyle, as well as making the public aware of cancer’s warning signs since early detection is the key to saving a life.

“I would also like to empower other women in the society and focusing more on prevention to stop gender-based violence against women and girls, which is rooted in gender-based discrimination and social norms. The best way to end violence against women and girls is to prevent it from happening in the first place by addressing its root and structural causes. Prevention should start early in life, by educating and working with young boys and girls promoting respectful relationships and gender equality,” she says.

Salmi was born and bred in Oshakati and completed her Grade 12 at Gabriel Taapopi Senior Secondary School in the Oshana region. She is a Bachelor of Accounting (Honours) graduate of the University of Namibia (Unam) and also has a Diploma in Government Studies, also from Unam. She started working as an Accountant at L.Robson Chartered Accountant and currently she is a Senior Administrator at the Roads Authority.

“Winning this pageant has enabled me to create a portfolio of myself and now I aim to expand my modeling career to the fullest,” she Salmi who started her modelling career in 2012 by taking part in small pageants and modelling events. Last year she took part in Face of Namibia beauty pageant held in the capital coming 6th runner up. She also represented Namibia at Miss Heritage World IN Lesotho last year.  “As part of my winning prize at Katutura Expo, I will be representing the Khomas region at Miss Tourism Namibia that will take place in September.  I would like to thank all the companies that have sponsored the expo, as well as small businesses, farmers, entertainment groups and religions for taking part and supporting this exposition,” says Salmi.
