A wholly Namibian-owned supermarket, Model, will officially replace Pick n Pay Namibia as of 1 July 2025. The transition is already in motion, with a phased refurbishment approach that will gradually bring the full Model experience to life from the beginning of July when Model will officially launch across the country.
This re-emergence, as Model was O&L’s initial foray into the retail space in the 1960’s, sets the stage for a bold and inspiring shopping experience that Model’s parent company, Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group, calls the dawn of a new era in Namibian retail. “For decades, O&L has remained steadfast in its commitment to innovation, quality and customer-centricity. This next chapter marks an extraordinary opportunity to elevate the everyday, transforming grocery shopping from a routine task into an experience filled with delight and inspiration,” reads an O&L statement.
The group added that Model is not just a name, but is instead a statement. “A promise to our customers that shopping will never be the same again. It represents excellence, aspiration and accessibility, underpinned by O&L’s resolute dedication to creating a retail environment that seamlessly blends world-class standards with the warmth of Namibian hospitality,” O&L stated.
Commenting on the retail evolution, Model’s managing director Graeme Mouton said: “While we are keeping some of the most exciting details under wraps for now, what we can reveal is that Model will introduce a fresh and dynamic approach to retail, with hand-picked quality products and a thoughtfully, curated shopping experience. Customers can look forward to a new benchmark in grocery retail that is designed around their needs – one that is inspiring, seamless and uniquely Namibian.”
“The O&L Group’s retail journey began with Modelin 1965, and now, 60 years later, we return to these roots with renewed passion and purpose. This transition is more than a name-change; it is a bold evolution that will redefine how Namibians shop. Our commitment to our people – both employees and customers – remains unchanged, ensuring continuity in service while introducing fresh opportunities for growth and excellence,” added Sven Thieme, O&L group executive chairman.
“Model is not only a store; it is a movement. It stands for authenticity, care and passion – the core characteristics of our O&L Persona. As we take full ownership of our retail future, we invite all Namibians to join us on this exciting journey. Stay tuned for more details as we unveil what’s next. The countdown to a revolutionary retail experience has begun!” Mouton added.
