The Namibian motorsport fraternity is in shock following the death of Jaco van Dyk, a prominent figure in the sport and owner of Van Dyk Petroleum, in a car accident near Grootfontein on Saturday evening. 

Van Dyk was a household name in Namibian racing circles, with years of experience across various motorsport codes. 

Known for his fierce competitiveness on the track and his larger-than-life personality off it, he leaves behind a legacy that has shaped the motorsport in Namibia. 

Racing Commission chairperson Bradley Ferreira recalled Van Dyk’s international ambitions: 

“In 2019 he qualified to take part in the prestigious Dakar Rally but was forced to withdraw after a helicopter accident. His children are actively involved in motorsports, and he was their biggest supporter. He left a deep footprint in Namibian Motorsport.” 

Derek Jacobs, secretary general of the Namibia Motorsport Federation, said Van Dyk will be remembered for his spirit: 

“He will always be remembered for his fierce competitiveness and his amazing character after an event, when his laugh filled the room. My condolences to the Van Dyk family.” 

Namibia Motorsport Federation president Daniel Tjingarero described Van Dyk as a true legend: 

“Jaco was fiercely competitive, but after an event he was the most joyful person. There will never be another Jaco van Dyk in Namibian motorsport for a very long time.” 

Van Dyk’s deep love for the sport extended to his family, with his children following in his footsteps as active competitors under his guidance and encouragement. 

Freddy Mwiya , chief administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission, expressed his condolences: 

“The loss of a human life is a loss to all of humankind and to the family. We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time. His life was taken far too soon, and we pray for the federation members while hoping his legacy will remain with us.” 

Beyond racing, Van Dyk was admired for his generosity, sportsmanship and determination to uplift the motorsport community. His support extended to young and upcoming drivers, often mentoring and encouraging them to pursue their dreams. 

As tributes continue to pour in, one thing is certain: Jaco van Dyk’s passion, determination, and unmistakable spirit have left a lasting legacy in Namibian motorsport.
