The Lüderitz and Oranjemund town councils on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that aims to enhance cooperation in the areas of economic advancement and overall development between the two towns.
Speaking at the ceremony, outgoing Lüderitz mayor Suzan Ndjaleka said that as towns whose economies rely heavily on the mining sector, the MoU could not have come at a better time.
“I strongly believe that both councils will henceforth unite forces and push for the opening of the Chamais road, which will not only shorten the distance between Lüderitz and Oranjemund, but equally strengthen the tourism industry between the two towns,” said Ndjaleka.
She believes that through this agreement, service delivery will be energized as the two councils would share ideas and experience on how to improve service delivery.
Oranjemund Mayor Henry Coetzee indicated it is the responsibility of the two councils to find ways in which to assist their communities and people towards improving their living standard, to eradicate poverty and get one step closer to reaching the country’s Vision 2030.
Coetzee said that the arrangement aims to develop possible tourism initiatives and technical co-operation between the two coastal towns, which face similar challenges. Other areas of cooperation would be in environmental health management, town planning, waste management, community development and housing.
