MTC Cup – Big Guns Crash Out

Home Archived MTC Cup – Big Guns Crash Out

By Kuvee Kangueehi WINDHOEK Big guns Blue Waters and United Africa Tigers crashed out of the MTC Cup over the weekend while defending champions Civics FC progressed to the second round of the lucrative competition after a penalty shootout. Civics FC came from two goals down against Chief Santos to avoid falling out of the competition at the first hurdle. Santos, who enjoyed home advantage at Tsumeb, took a two-goal lead early in the first half through their talismanic striker Ricardo Witbeen. After the shaky start Civics pulled one back just before half-time through their midfielder Tuyeni Tugela to make the halftime score 2-1. In the second half Civics pressed for an equalizer and were rewarded late in the game when their evergreen marksman William Chilufya scored to send the tie to penalties. Civics in the end came out on top when they beat Santos 4-2 on penalties. In Mariental, Blue Waters’ season moved from bad to worse when they were knocked out of the cup by Black Africa. The Katutura side appear to be enjoying a fine run under their player/coach Ronnie Kanalelo and beat Blue Waters 5-3 in an exciting match. In other matches African Stars continued their fine run in cup competitions when they beat Tough Guys 1- 0 to progress to the second round while Ramblers beat Friends 4-2 to move to the next round as well. Cymot SKW scored seven goals against Zambezi United to record one of the high scores for the weekend while Rundu Chiefs also looked impressive with an 8-0 win over Aranos FC. The draw for the next round will be done this morning at Soccer House and the next round will take place at Otjiwarongo and Keetmanshoop this weekend.
