MTC Maris Cup returns

MTC Maris Cup returns

After postponing the MTC Maris Cup semi-final matches to honour late Founding President Sam Nujoma, organisers have now confirmed that the games will take place next month.

The semi-finals were originally scheduled for 15-16 February.

However, following the sudden passing of Namibia’s first president, the decision was made to postpone the matches as a mark of respect.

The four teams that will be battling for the N$1.5 million grand price are Unam, African Stars, Young African and Bucs Buccaneers.

The games will be held at Mariental Sport Stadium in the //Kharas region.

Unam will square off against Gobabis-based outfit Young African on 8 March at 14h00.

Debmarine premiership champions African Stars will lock horns against Bucs Buccaneers later that day at 17h00.

Reacting to the announcement, Young African’s Marley Ngarithemo, expressed mixed feelings about the delay.

“Yes, it’s a good thing that the matches will now be played next weekend. The players have had enough time to rest. I believe they will rise to the occasion. However, cup games of this nature require teams to play at least two competitive league matches beforehand to ensure the players are in peak condition,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bucs Buccaneers head coach Woody Jacobs said he is looking forward to their clash against Stars, a team he acknowledges as a formidable opponent.

“It’s going to be a tough match against Stars, but I’m looking forward to it. They have a star-studded squad and will undoubtedly be the favourites, but we are ready for the challenge,” Jacobs said.

The MTC Maris Cup is contested exclusively by the 16 clubs of the Debmarine Premiership.

With a staggering N$1.5 million prize for the winner, the competition aims to elevate the profile of Namibian football and incentivise clubs to give their best in pursuit of glory.

The final of the tournament will be played in Windhoek, with dates yet to be announced.
