The fourth edition of the much-anticipated MTC Horseracing Winter Cup was officially launched in the capital yesterday, when a N$200 000 sponsorship was announced for this year’s competition by MTC.

The event takes place at Okondjatu in the Otjozondjupa region this coming weekend, and the country’s top racehorses will be expected to grace the event.

Namibia Horse Racing Association (NHRA) president Marthinus de Waal yesterday said everything is set and all participants have confirmed their readiness for the race.

“The very best of Namibian racehorses will grace this event, as there will be big money to be won when local horses compete for top prizes. We have also invited international riders from Botswana but they have not yet confirmed their participation,” De Waal said.

The Winter Cup, organised by the NHRA and hosted by the Okondjatu Horse Racing Club, will feature participants from Gobabis, Rehoboth, Okakarara, Otjinene, Aminuis and Okahandja.

The biggest winning prize at this event will be N$30 000, while the lowest price will be N$7 000.

“Horseracing continues to grow and with the support of our sponsor (MTC), we will realise significant growth,” De Waal added.

MTC’s Fikameni Mateus said without a doubt, horse racing is one of the most popular sports events in the country, which is why they keep taking the sport to the different regions in the country.

“We want to see sports professionalised in the country and we believe taking the events to different regions will allow everyone to enjoy it, while at the same time showing other corporates the importance of getting on board so that we can grow sports in this country,” he said.
