RUNDU – As young people grapple with societal ills and unemployment, former student leader Vernet Mukoya has created a haven for them. 

He established a disciplinary camp to assist young individuals with issues such as substance abuse, alcohol dependency, teenage pregnancy, insufficient discipline as well as a lack of focus in their personal lives and academic pursuits. 

Mukoya is a teacher at Rundu’s Kehemu Senior Primary School.

“Previously, I would do donations and stuff, but I have now decided to come up with something that will impact our society positively and in a broader way,” he said.

His idea was fuelled by his dedication to assisting others, and his commitment to discipline. The one-week camp, which was recently held at a campsite along the Kavango River, brought together teenagers and young adults.

They engaged in discussions about life, and received guidance on managing the challenges and peer pressures that can lead to the lack of discipline or substance abuse. 

They also explored ways to cultivate appreciation for their parents and people in their lives.

His goal is “to assist young people to discover themselves, particularly those who are struggling with drugs and alcohol, as well as other challenges that they may be going through. If we can help them, we can make a difference,” he said.Mukoya has roped in professionals such as academics, social workers, entrepreneurs, authors and life coaches to guide and engage young people.

“This is the start. After this, we will see how we move forward, but our wish is to be doing this in future. We don’t want it to end with the first edition. We also hope to get sponsors on board to assist so that this initiative can grow for the betterment of our community and society at large,” he noted.
