MUZII – Community members of Muzii in the flood plains of Kabbe South in the Zambezi region have lamented the slow pace to implement capital projects in the area. Among others, community members are irked about the delay to complete a local clinic.
The construction of the N$4.4 million prefabricated clinic and staff accommodation started in April 2020, and it was due to be completed in October 2021.
“It is now going to be three years since the construction work of the clinic started, but it is not yet complete for it to be opened. This means our cry will continue, as the flood is upon us. As we are talking, the floodwater is about to surround us.
Itomba clinic is very far. If only they could bring us a nurse to assist during flood time while we await the completion of the clinic. We have women and disabled persons who cannot puddle to Itomba,” said Village Development Committee chairperson Joseph Liyungu.
Contacted for comment, health ministry spokesperson Walters Kamaya explained that “although there has been difficulty in accessing the site, the contractor has had financial difficulties in the completion of the project.”
Kamaya explained that the current expenditure stands at about N$3.5 million, adding that the contractor is in breach of the contract. As such, the ministry has started proceedings to cancel the tender.
“The current buildings can, however, not be used due to the absence of a wastewater treatment plant. The ministry has initiated an Environmental Impact Assessment study before the treatment plant can be procured,” stated Kamaya.
