My first day at New Era

Home Columns My first day at New Era

MY first at day at work was hectic and partly disappointing. It all began when I failed to wake up on time as planned because of the coldness of that morning.  At that point I already had a strange feeling things will not run as I had planned.

However, I pulled myself together, and I did as planned afterwards and now came the interesting but yet distressing part. The taxi rank was packed and taxis didn’t want to stop and not to mention the traffic jam, it took me an hour to get a taxi and I was so excited. But just after one kilometer the taxi driver decided he was no longer going to my destination.

I looked at him with a strange face but he never seemed to change his mind, sending me back to square one and at that time 08h00 was fast approaching and I spent another 30 minutes waiting.

Upon reaching the newsroom at New Era I found all the reporters and editors gathered and doing a post-mortem on the newspaper and planning for the next day’s edition. At one point I almost went back – but I gained strength to walk through so as to avoid more harm than I had done, though I didn’t say a word.

Staff members looked at me in amazement and with puzzled expressions. I thought to myself were they asking themselves, “where is this boy coming from and what is he doing here” – but no one said a word.

After the meeting, I was introduced to the staff who welcomed me with humbleness; this helped me to be a little bit at ease. I waited for an induction into the organization but instead I got my first task immediately and luckily I was assisted accordingly.

Am happy with the organization. Anyone would love and wish to work with these amazing people and thus far I am getting acquainted with the work environment where I am on a journalism internship.

I able to get along with these delightful, polite and friendly staff members around me. At this point I feel like I am one of them and I can relate to them professionally without being scared.

Jokes are made here and there but when it comes to doing work everyone gets busy and concentrates on his particular task and gets it done. Some days it gets nasty and tiring especially when you are piled up with work and you have to meet deadlines – the good part, no one harasses you but only father time does.

Teamwork builds and staff in the newsroom work strictly as a team.
