Members of the police in Omusati are in hot pursuit of a gang of suspects, who allegedly assaulted a woman in the area of Onkani at Omusati while robbing her of about N$20 000 in cash.

The incident happened past midnight on July 24. Almost a month later, a police source informed New Era that the unknown suspects remain at large.

The police said what complicates the case is the fact the identities of the thugs remain unknown. It is alleged the suspects broke into the victim’s room, tied her up and forcefully took her money. It is further alleged the victim was also severely assaulted.

The money was apparently withdrawn by her husband, who left shortly afterwards for the couple’s cattle post in the Uuvudhiya area. It is further alleged that when the incident was reported to the police at Onkani, there were no officers on duty and so the matter was only reported the following morning.

Several residents of Uuvudhiya, who were present during Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila’s address on Wednesday, informed her that the area is in dire need of a police station.

Several community members alleged that crime goes unreported in their area and in many instances the crimes are also reported late, because there is no mobile network coverage in the vicinity.

“We are in need of a police station, as well as a network tower, because there is no network here and that makes it difficult to report matters, because we do not have a police station of our own,” explained one of the community members in attendance.
