Nakathila: I’m coming for more

Nakathila: I’m coming for more

Namibia’s world-class boxing star Jeremiah ‘Lowkey’ Nakathila says he is ready to conquer the lightweight division following his dominant sixth-round victory over Mexico’s Miguel Berchelt late Saturday.

“I’m ready to conquer this division [lightweight], and I want to remind all those boys in this division not to forget my name. I’m here and I want to challenge them all. I can do both – the junior lightweight and lightweight – so it’s all up to my promoter to decide and see what the future looks like. But I’m here and I want more,” said Nakathila after his victory over a somewhat out-of-sorts Berchelt.

Nakathila (23-2, 19 knockouts) earned a measure of redemption following his one-sided decision loss to Shakur Stevenson last year, pummelling Berchelt (38-3, 34 KOs) at Resorts World in Las Vegas, USA.

His promoter Nestor Tobias expressed joy over Nakathila’s win, saying their mission has been accomplished and their focus is now fully focused on future opportunities.

“I’m proud of Nakathila and what he has done for the country. I’m extremely excited and now we focus on the future. The future looks bright and we are super- excited,” said Tobias.

It was clear early on that Berchelt was not the same fighter he had been several years ago, and appeared to be a spent force in his first fight since his brutal knockout loss to Oscar Valdez over a year ago. Berchelt, (30) hit the canvas in round three off a jab and was fighting from behind most of the way.

Nakathila (32) picked off Berchelt on his way in, knocking his mouthpiece out in the sixth round with a brutal right hand. With his face swollen and his reflexes slowed, the end was clearly before Berchelt.

All three judges had Nakathila pitching a shutout at 60-53 at the time of stoppage.

In supporting bouts, Eduardo Baez (21-2-2, 7 KOs) won a majority decision over Jose Vivas (21-2, 11 KOs) in a 10-round featherweight bout.

One judge scored it at 95-95, while the other two had it 98-92 and 96-94 for Baez, who bounces back from his majority decision loss to Ra’eese Aleem last November.

The event was promoted by Top Rank.
