Staff Reporter WINDHOEK The Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Libertina Amathila, has praised diamond-miner Namdeb’s social responsibility programmes as supreme, adding that “this befits a giant company of Namdeb’s stature.” Many of the developmental challenges that she had put to the Managing Director of the company in the past had always been met with positive responses, according to Dr Amathila. “In my time as the Minister of Health, we have together achieved a lot. And now with the new challenges ahead of us, we are still following the same road,” she said. She was speaking at a recent colourful function held to mark the electrification of a rural school for San children in the Omaheke region. The Namdeb Social Fund made the electrification possible with a donation. The donation followed a visit by the San school children and teachers from Donkerbos Primary School to Namdeb’s head office some two weeks ago. Namdeb lived up to its promise to donate an engine and electric lighting to the school. This has changed the long-held perception that there would never be light in the small rural village town called Donkerbos. Donkerbos is situated 260 kilometres from Gobabis. During his speech, Hilifa Mbako, the Group Manager: External & Public Affairs, humorously informed the community that they could now refer to Donkerbos as “Ligterbos.” But, on a serious note, he assured the community that Namdeb views education as critical to the growth of a thriving economy and that it has and will continue to invest in all levels of education and training in order to ensure a brighter future for the country and its people. The function was attended by, among others, the Governor of the Omaheke Region, Laura McLoud, Traditional Chief Kahuure and Regional Councillor Matti Ndjoze. The Regional Educational Director, Dr T.T. Kamumpingene, and other officials represented the Education Ministry.
