Home Sports Namibia hosts African Canoe Polo on Sunday

WINDHOEK – The Namibia Canoeing and Rowing Federation (NCRF) is to host the African Canoe Polo Championships this coming Sunday.

The event will also double up as qualifier for the 11th International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Polo World Championships in France next year. The tournament will accommodate national and provincial teams from South Africa and Namibia in the following categories: senior men, U-21 men and ladies with an approximate 80 athletes expected to be in action slated for the Olympia swimming pool in Windhoek. It will be the first time that an international canoe polo event will take place in Namibia.

Canoe polo is played in an Olympic size swimming pool with a kayak and a canoe polo ball with 5 players on each side, while the ultimate objective of the game is to score goals in a goal post or cage that is suspended 2 metres above the water. Canoe polo is a fast and action packed contact sport. Players are allowed to tackle their opponent if in possession of the ball and it is the only sporting discipline where the NCRF has successfully competed at international level.
