The 27th conference of the parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an event that will allow nations to collaborate on how they can implement agreed climate goals under the Paris Agreement.
The summit is held from 6 to 18 November 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The delegation representing Namibia at COP27 is made up of prominent public and private sector stakeholders who will offer insights on and contribute to the larger conversation regarding Namibia’s position on climate change.
Namibia’s pavilion will host a series of dialogue sessions aimed
at showcasing Namibia as an investment destination and to catalyse interest from public and private entities to accelerate investment in Namibia’s adaptation and mitigation targets.
Namibia’s position on COP27 is based on the four pillars of the convention, mainly: finance, adaptation, mitigation and technology transfer.
The Namibian delegation at COP27 will build on to COP26 and other preceding COPs. It was agreed that parties in Egypt should submit stronger 2030 emissions reduction targets with the aim of closing the gap to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and these are the initiatives that the country aims to showcase through the various lined up side events.
“Namibia aims to showcase the country’s achievements to date towards the attainment of the Paris Agreement Goals, to increase investments towards programmes/projects geared towards the attainment of the NDG targets and to provide a networking platform for the Namibian delegation to engage on an international platform,” said Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB), who will host Namibia’s pavilion at the event.
Furthermore, President Hage Geingob will attend the world leaders’ summit with the goal to build on past successes and pave the way for ambitious plans to tackle climate change in the future.
In a statement released yesterday, the Presidency said, “Namibia remains committed to combating the effects of climate change and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to cut carbon emissions by 91% by 2030, towards the fulfilment of SDG13 on climate action, the Paris Agreement, and Goal 7 of Africa’s Agenda 2063.”
