Namibia to play for bronze after semi-final loss to Zim

In a major upset in African rugby, defending champions Namibia were defeated 32-10 by Zimbabwe in yesterday’s Africa Cup match in Kampala, Uganda.

With this victory, Zimbabwe advance to the final, where they will face Algeria on Sunday. Algeria secured their spot in the final by defeating Kenya 20-12, with star fullback Julien Caminati kicking four penalties to guide his team to victory.

Namibia will now compete for third place against Kenya. Reflecting on the loss, Namibian captain Danco Burger acknowledged their mistakes. “We made ball, handling mistakes. We didn’t underestimate Zimbabwe. We knew how physical and skilful they are. It’s a tough loss, and we need to go back and make introspection, and come back better,” he said.

Zimbabwe’s captain Hilton Mudariki highlighted the significance of their victory, noting that  they have never beaten Namibia in the last 22 years.

“I have been in the system for almost 11 years, and the Namibians have always been dominant. We have quality guys, mixed with youth and experience. We also have an excellent coaching setup, which encourages us to express ourselves. Everyone wants to play in the final, and we are blessed to have reached it. We now have hard work to do because Algeria is a quality side,” he said.

In other matches played yesterday, Uganda triumphed over Burkina Faso with a score of 25-15, while Senegal comfortably defeated Ivory Coast 25-8.
