The Namibia Wrestling Federation is on a mission to build a strong team for the upcoming African Championships in Casablanca, Morocco, this April.
As part of their preparation, the federation recently sent a team of 14 athletes to compete in a wrestling tournament in Pretoria, South Africa, held from 21 to 23 February.
The Namibian team delivered an impressive performance, bringing home eight gold medals, three silver and three bronze.
The federation’s secretary general Anke Erasmus said the event was a major success and an essential step in their long-term development plan.
“We are in the process of assembling a strong team to represent Namibia at the African Championships. Competing in this event was part of our strategy to give athletes the necessary exposure. We know the competition in Morocco will be on a completely different level,” she said.
Erasmus noted that the federation has more competitions lined up as part of its long-term vision.
“This is part of our long-term strategy. We want to ensure our athletes compete in all major events leading up to 2030. With the Olympics also coming up, early preparation will put us in a strong position when those competitions arrive,” she added.
