Namibian archers take aim in SA

Home Sports Namibian archers take aim in SA

RUSTENBURG – For the first time in history, four Southern African countries competed at the 2-day All Star Africa Championship at the Civics Centre in Rustenburg, South Africa.

Apart from hosts South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe fielded teams of archers from grades 4 to 12 shooting their arrows at distances of 10 and 15 metres.
Participants started shooting in a ranking round, after which they were grouped into teams of four archers. Subsequently, the teams shot against each other on an elimination basis.
South Africa had two extra squads – Centre Shot and a development team. All together 96 archers filled the shooting line with children having lots of fun. The tourney also produced ‘fireworks’ as some archers recorded personal best scores.
Christie Agenbach (Berg-Op Academy Okahandja) claimed the runner-up award with a silver medal for the 2nd best individual score for girls. Lukas Els (home schooling) claimed 5th place in the boys division, tumbling the old Namibian record of 292 out of 300.
Namibia finished the tourney as the runner-up team behind hosts South Africa with Zimbabwe adrift in 3rd spot. Archers representing Namibia were mainly selected from six schools across the country – in Koës, Lüderitz, Okahandja and Windhoek.
The Archery Association of Namibia (AAN) thanked the following sponsors: NovaNam, Absolute Logistics, Tren Tyre, iLogistics, Namdeb, Nest Hotel, Protea Hotel, Namib Garage Aus, Hydromatics, Afro Pumps and Butt Archery Suppliers. AAN will host its next event in Walvis Bay on December 28 this year.
