WINDHOEK – After putting up a blistery performance to scoop Namibia’s only silver medal at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Namibia’s young boxing sensation, Junias Jonas and his team have now shifted their attention to the upcoming African Open Boxing Championship, in Vacoas, Mauritius on 22-31 August.
The round-robin system championship, which was initially to be hosted late last year, but cancelled due to a few technicalities, will finally take place this month and the aim of the tourney is to improve the boxers rankings worldwide.
Secretary-General of the Namibia Boxing Federation (NBF), Joe Kaperu, announced the news during yesterday press conference where the NBF executive official welcomed the boxers who participated at the just-ended Commonwealth Games.
The winners in the various weight categories will earn points, which will help improve their rankings, a scenario that helps boxers’ reputations when participating at international levels. The Namibian team will consist of boxers who recently participated the Commonwealth Games, the Zonal and the African championships, as they have been active and are well conditioned.
According to Kaperu, before the Namibian team departs for Mauritius, the NBF will host a Two-Nations Tourney featuring Botswana where boxers will be given a final opportunity to adequately wrap up their preparations.
