Namport invests N$22m in smart operations … enhancing terminal stacking density, container handling flexibility

The Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) has marked another key milestone in its port modernisation journey by investing over N$22 million in logistics support, including next-generation reach stackers, at the Port of Walvis Bay.

The equipment was supplied by Forklift Allied Equipment, a long-standing strategic partner in Namport’s fleet modernisation programme.

The newly delivered machines are E-Series telescopic reach stackers, designed to meet modern port performance standards and support Namport’s drive towards smart engineering, operational efficiency, and enhanced safety. The reach stackers are configured for 45-tonne capacity in the first row and 32-tonne capacity in the second row, with a stacking height of up to five containers.

This capability significantly enhances terminal stacking density and container handling flexibility, particularly in high-volume operational environments.

From an operational perspective, modern reach stackers offer several upgrades that directly improve productivity and safety.

These upgrades include; Enhanced braking systems, providing superior control and stopping performance; Improved lighting systems, enabling safer and more efficient night-time operations. The upgrades also includes, upgraded spreader technology, offering greater precision and reliability in container handling; Integrated camera systems, supporting safer reversing and improved situational awareness for operators.  These upgraded features collectively strengthen Namport’s ability to deliver safe, efficient, and reliable port services while minimising operational risk and equipment downtime.

In a media statement, Namport noted that this latest investment underscores the port’s commitment to continuously upgrading its equipment fleet in line with international port standards and smart port principles.

“Through the deployment of these technologically advanced handling systems, Namport improves vessel turnaround times, enhances overall terminal efficiency, and further strengthens Namibia’s position as a competitive regional logistics and trade hub. The port authority commends Forklift Allied Equipment for the timely delivery of the reach stackers and appreciates the continued partnership, which plays an important role in supporting operational excellence and innovation across its ports,” Namport stated.

Meanwhile, Namport’s position as a world-class port remains steadfast as the authority recently declared a N$100 million dividend to its sole shareholder, the Namibian government.  The dividend, announced in December 2025 by Namport chairperson, Nangula Hamunyela, was related to Namport’s performance for the year ended 31 March 2025.

At the time, Hamunyela said that Namport had noted an increasing show of confidence from the market, with increased volumes of business from local customers, especially the mines and the agro-processing sector, as well as hinterland customers in Botswana, South Africa, the DRC and Zambia.

Going forward, Namport plans to prioritise logistical support to emerging sectors, such as the oil and gas industry, to position Namibia as a regional hub.
