WALVIS BAY – The Namibian Ports Authority is urging schools not to pay any money or fall prey to an ongoing scam that is targeting schools in the country.
Namport commercial executive Elia Mwenyo indicated in a statement yesterday that a certain Ronny Goeieman has been trying to scam schools by demanding money in order to allegedly ‘release’ donated goods from Europe to schools.
Mwenyo said the alleged scam was brought under their attention by the education ministry.
“A certain Goeieman has been contacting several schools on behalf of Namport, stating that there are containers with donations from Europe to be handed over to the schools, but the schools should first make payments in this regard. The calls are being made from cell phone number 0817221561. Please be informed that this is a scam, and Namport has not requested for such services from anyone,” he said on Wednesday.
Mwenyo added that it’s important to note that Namport will never ask for money from any members of the public, and will use official communication channels, including the company’s official letterhead.
“In the absence of such, please treat all other documents as a scam,” he appealed.
“An investigation is currently underway, and we would like to urge members of the public to remain vigilant and inform the acting security manager, Leo van Rooyen at 0811567863, or I.vanrooyen@namport.com.na in this regard”, the official added.
