National Symbols Campaign to foster patriotism

The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Peya Mushelenga, inaugurated the National Symbols Campaign on Thursday, marking a significant step in promoting the correct use and understanding of Namibia’s national symbols.

The campaign, which seeks to instil patriotism and strengthen national identity, was launched amidst great enthusiasm in Swakopmund.

“National pride is the positive effect that the public feels towards their country due to their national identity, and it makes them determined to jealously safeguard the gains of their country,” said Mushelenga, emphasising the significance of fostering a deep sense of patriotism among Namibians.

With the objective of educating Namibians about the significance of the national symbols and promoting adherence to the associated protocols, the campaign aims to foster a sense of unity and mutual trust among citizens. By targeting individuals from all walks of life, it seeks to enhance the understanding of the importance of national symbols as tangible reminders of the nation’s history, struggles, and triumphs during the journey to independence and nationhood.

Speaking at the launch event, Mushelenga emphasised the role of national identity in cultivating a sense of belongingness and patriotism. He highlighted that a strong national identity instils pride in citizens and motivates them to actively protect the achievements and progress of their country.

The National Symbols Campaign will be rolled out across all 14 regions of Namibia through a comprehensive outreach programme and extensive media coverage. These initiatives will serve as vital platforms for educating citizens about the correct use of national symbols, such as the national flag, coat of arms, national anthem, and other emblematic representations of the country’s identity.

Through workshops, seminars, and public events, the campaign will provide a platform for citizens to engage in discussions, ask questions, and deepen their knowledge of the national symbols.

The ministry said the media will play a crucial role in disseminating information and raising awareness about the campaign, ensuring its reach extends to every corner of the nation. The launch of the National Symbols Campaign heralds an important chapter in strengthening Namibian patriotism and fostering national pride.

As citizens across the country engage in learning about the correct use of national symbols, it is expected that the campaign will contribute to a more profound understanding of Namibia’s history, heritage, and the collective journey towards a prosperous future.
