KEETMANSHOOP – The Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, John Mutorwa, has warned that his ministry as the custodian of the Neckartal Dam project will ensure the project is implemented by Salini SpA and all other stakeholders according to the contractual agreements and applicable laws of Namibia.

Reacting to joint operations by the police and customs and immigration officials against workers at the project, the minister said in a strongly worded media release that nobody is above the law, adding that Namibia is a sovereign state founded upon the principles of democracy and rule of law.

He said the activities at the project like all other government activities must be strictly managed, supervised and practically carried out in accordance with applicable policy decisions and directives.

He said relevant offices and agencies of government including imigration and the police , who are legally entrusted with the administration and enforcement of policy decisions and directives, especially the constitution and laws of the country are legally and constitutionally duty-bound to ensure that laws are practically adhered to.

The minister noted that the government through the ministry once again called on and urged all parties and stakeholders involved in the construction of the dam to continue to enhance cooperation, mutual trust and understanding at all times in order to ensure that this vitally important national project is successfully completed as agreed to and on schedule.

Meanwhile, Head of Immigration at Keetmanshoop, Fina Elago, confirmed that the two men who were taken in for questioning by her officials yesterday were still being questioned and will appear in court as soon as all investigations are completed.
