Keetmanshoop
Two buses carrying 104 workers who are employed at the Neckartal dam building site collided near the site on Tuesday, causing serious injuries to six of the workers and the two bus drivers.
The dam is currently being constructed at a cost of some N$2.4 billion.
At about 06h00 a Salini bus transporting 43 employees was on its way to Keetmanshoop to drop them off after they had worked the nightshift. Upon stopping to drop off one worker, a bus of Emangweni Transport Services ferrying 61 workers swerved onto the right side of the road and collided head-on with the stationary bus.
The //Karas regional crime coordinator Commissioner Rudolf Isaak said that the driver of the Emangweni bus, identified as Victor Kooper, applied the brakes after swerving into the wrong lane “but according to the driver the brakes failed”.
Both drivers are said to have suffered serious injuries and were admitted to the Keetmanshoop state hospital, while six passengers who also sustained serious injuries were admitted to hospital as well.
A case of negligent driving has been opened and police investigations continue.
