KEETMANSHOOP – The 24th edition of the prestigious Nedbank/Namibian Newspaper Cup will be hosted this year in Keetmanshoop, from 3 to 6 April.
This was revealed yesterday when a delegation comprising representatives from Nedbank Namibia, Namibian Newspaper, Namibia Football Association (NFA), Netball Namibia, Coca-Cola, Keetmanshoop Municipality, and the//Kharas governor’s office inspected sports facilities and infrastructure at the Westdene sports stadium in the town.
According to Cassius Moetie, NFA Director for Marketing, Communication, Sales and Information Technology, each of the country’s 14 regions will be represented with a U/20 foot-and-netball team who will compete for the winning cups/trophies. “We are happy thus far with the facilities and believe that the grass will, in the meantime, grow to standard size for the football games, and in addition, the netball courts will be upgraded accordingly prior to the commencement of the Easter long-weekend event,” he explained. “A lot will be invested at the sports fields and infrastructure to bring it up to standard for safety purposes, whilst the two local secondary school hostels will also be refurbished to accommodate players from the other 13 regions.”
He further called on the local business fraternity to come on board and assist the organising committee in kind to ensure everything is ready when the games start.
Moetie also reasoned that accommodation establishments, supermarkets, fast food outlets, and small entrepreneurs can profit from their products and services during the duration of the sports tourney.
“Managers and owners of our Premier League teams will definitely, as was the case in the past, attend the event, looking for possible young talented players to absorb in their teams for the future,” he said.
The event will be officially launched in Windhoek on 9 March.
