The highly anticipated Netball Africa Games commenced on Monday at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund, marking a significant milestone in African netball history.
The competition, running until 14 December, features teams from across the continent competing in women’s and men’s categories. Host nation Namibia is competing in both categories, joined by several other countries.
In the women’s category, teams include Eswatini, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The men’s category sees participation from Eswatini, Kenya, Lesotho, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Sports minister Agnes Tjongarero expressed the nation’s pride in hosting the event. “Sport is a powerful tool to advance development in Namibia, improving opportunities for our athletes and ensuring platforms like this become moments of growth for our nation,” she said.
She extended heartfelt gratitude to Debmarine Namibia, the primary sponsor of the event, for its unwavering support of Namibian sport and athletes.
The executive director of sport, Mbumba Haitengela, warmly welcomed the teams, officials and fans to Swakopmund.
“This tournament is more than just a competition. It celebrates the spirit of unity, inclusion and excellence which netball brings to Africa,” he remarked.
He highlighted the groundbreaking nature of this year’s games, noting that male netball is taking centre stage alongside the women’s competition.
“This showcases Namibia’s commitment to inclusivity and innovation in sport. Together, we are redefining what netball represents – not only for Africa but for the world,” he added.
He stressed the broader significance of the event.
“The Ministry of Sports, Youth and National Service is proud to support this momentous occasion. It’s a platform that empowers youth, promotes equality and strengthens African unity. To all participating teams, compete with pride and passion. To the fans, let’s create an atmosphere that embodies the warmth and vibrancy of the African culture,” he said. In their opening match, the Namibian women’s side defeated Eswatini 58-47 in a highly entertaining match.
The team will face Uganda at 18h00 today.
The men’s side fell 67-38 against South Africa in their opener. They lost 50-48 against Zambia in their second encounter and were set to play Eswatini yesterday.
They will now face Zimbabwe at 18h00 today.
