New Jaecoo J5 to raise bar for compact crossovers

New Jaecoo J5 to raise bar for compact crossovers

Making its global debut at the 2025 Shanghai International Auto Show, the all-new Jaecoo J5 is a striking new crossover that expands the brand’s presence with a more accessible and compact offering.

Positioned below the J7, the more compact J5 brings the Jaecoo marque within reach of Namibians seeking a premium SUV experience at a more accessible price point.

Despite its smaller footprint, the J5 retains the high levels of luxury, safety and convenience that have come to define the Jaecoo brand. Power comes from a responsive 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 115 kW and 230 Nm of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) driving the front wheels. There are various drive modes for the driver to select from, including ‘Normal,’ ‘Eco’ and ‘Sport’.

In due course, the J5 lineup will grow to accommodate plug-in hybrid and battery-electric derivatives.

“The Jaecoo J5 represents the next chapter for our brand in southern Africa,” commented Shannon Gahagan, national brand and marketing manager for Omoda and Jaecoo South Africa.

“It brings the same premium quality and design sophistication that our customers expect now in a more compact and attainable package,” he added.

Inside, the J5 offers occupants a first-rate experience onboard, with wireless charging, voice command functionality and an available panoramic sunroof.

Options include leather upholstery and many other luxuries – from automatic climate control to ambient lighting and ventilated seating. Safety is of the utmost importance at Jaecoo, reflected in the J7 SHS plug-in hybrid’s five-star score in recent Euro NCAP crash testing. The J5 is no exception.

It comes equipped with collision avoidance technology, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot detection – just to name a few of the safety features.

“With its advanced safety features, versatility and refined interior, the new J5 is designed to meet the needs of modern South Africans who want more from their daily drive,” stated Gahagan.

In addition to its urban practicality, the J5 measures 4 380mm long, making it ideal for city commuting.

The newcomer is ready for all sorts of adventures.

It has robust underbody protection to shield it from the harshest gravel roads and towing capability to meet the needs of drivers who demand versatility.

The Jaecoo J5 is expected to launch in southern Africa during the second half of 2025.
