Namibian boxing star Fillipus ‘Energy’ Nghitumbwa is set to face South Africa’s undefeated Mxolisi Zuma in a high-stakes clash for the WBO Global Super Bantamweight title on 9 August at the Windhoek Country Club Resort and Casino.
The bout, dubbed the ‘Road to the World Title,’ promises fireworks as both fighters are highly ranked by the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) and share one ambition: a shot at a world title.
According to the organisers, the WBO has acknowledged Nghitumbwa’s persistent pursuit of a world championship and has sanctioned this bout as a WBO Global title contest. Nghitumbwa, who has built an impressive resume, is riding a four-fight winning streak following his controversial loss to former two-time world champion John Riel Casimero in the Philippines. Since then, he’s redeemed himself with standout victories – first against Thato Bonokoane of South Africa, then a win over WBO top-15 ranked Chinese boxer DeKang Wang on home soil. He further proved his prowess by knocking out former world champion Yukinori Oguni in Japan in the first round and defeating Hassan Milanzi in his last local bout.
With a record of 16 fights, 14 wins and only two losses, Nghitumbwa is currently rated in the top 15 by both the WBO and WBC. He says he remains focused and has been hard at work in training camp, gearing up for what could be the most defining fight of his career.
Standing in his way is Zuma, a dangerous and undefeated South African knockout artist. Zuma boasts a perfect 10-0 record, with every single victory coming by knockout, a 100% knockout rate that underlines the threat he poses in the ring.
“This boxing bonanza is themed ‘Road to World Title,’ because both boxers are elite-level fighters. Their rankings and records speak for themselves; they are only one step away from a potential world title opportunity,” the organisers said in a statement.
Promoter Nestor Tobias expressed gratitude to sponsors MTC and PstBet for their unwavering support. He also acknowledged the Namibian government’s role in supporting international bouts, saying Nghitumbwa’s victory could pave the way for a full-fledged world title shot.
“We need the entire boxing fraternity to come out and support Nghitumbwa in this crucial fight. His win will not only elevate his career but Namibian boxing as a whole,” Tobias said.
VIP tables (seating 10) are available for N$20 000, while general tickets are priced at N$200. Details of the undercard will be announced soon.
