GOBABIS – The president of the Namibian Horse Racing Association (NHRA) Mannes Hendricks recognised various horse clubs for the role they played in nurturing and promoting the beautiful sport.

Established in early 1990, NHRA has 20 clubs from various parts of the country.  To register a club, a constitution and N$2 000 are required.

Hendricks, in an interview with New Era Sports, said the tireless efforts and massive contributions from all stakeholders in horseracing countrywide are commendable.

The NHRA president acknowledged the horseracing clubs for creating an environment that encourages camaraderie and healthy competition.

He reckoned the efforts and roles of race organisers, riders, and ensuring the well-being of the horses are indeed commendable.

“Without your dedication, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the thrilling races we always enjoy. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to each club for your unwavering commitment to this sport,” he said.

He further urged the clubs to continue working together to elevate horseracing to greater heights in the coming years.

Hendricks also recognised the horseracing fanatics for their energy and enthusiasm as a heartbeat of NHRA.  “Your presence throughout the season shows your deep love for the sport, and I cannot thank you enough for standing by us,” he said.

The association president said the horses, jockeys, and teams all draw inspiration from the supporters and their continued involvement is key to making horseracing thrive.

“Whether you were at the event physically, or cheered from home, you are a vital part of what makes Namibian horseracing special,” Hendricks expressed.

On the sponsors, the horses’ clubs leader said the unwavering support from all sponsors is appreciated by the association.

“Your generosity makes our events possible and your commitment to our local sports community is valuable. It is through such a partnership that we can continue to grow the sport and reach new milestones,” he said.

The role of media as the development partner in the promotion of horseracing was also acknowledged by NHRA.

Hendricks said the coverage of events through various media platforms such as radio, print, television, and online play a crucial part in raising awareness, engaging the public, and fostering a deeper appreciation for this beautiful sport.

“By sharing stories of triumph, talent and dedication, you help build excitement and inspire the next generation of fans, jockeys, and trainers. We value the media’s ongoing support, and together, we will continue to elevate NHRA to new heights. The president emphasised that NHRA will continue collaborating with the sponsors in the years to come and make horseracing even more accessible and exciting for the people of Namibia.

Despite the positive contributions of the stakeholders, horseracing infrastructure is a challenge and needs to be addressed properly in each region.  “The horseracing sport gained momentum, but the infrastructure and facilities are challenges. We understand that for the sport to grow, we need to improve the facilities available to our clubs and participants across all regions,” he said.

Among the infrastructure to be developed are better tracks, stabling facilities, and training amenities.

Hendricks said the government, in collaboration with NHRA and sponsors like MTC, is committed to investing in the development of world-class infrastructure.

“Our goal is to make horseracing more accessible, sustainable, and enjoyable for everyone involved, from the jockeys to the spectators,” Hendricks said.

He wished all stakeholders a very happy festive season and urged them to come back stronger next year.
