NIST launches beauty hub

RUNDU – The Ngato Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) on Friday unveiled its Beauty Hub alongside the introduction of two new courses in clothing production and cosmetology, designed to empower young people in Rundu and beyond.

The cosmetology programme covers hair styling, skincare, nail care and make-up artistry.

About 15 local youths have been sponsored by NIST to join the first intake free of charge.

Both programmes combine classroom theory with hands-on practice, equipping trainees with technical skills and business knowledge essential for careers in the clothing and beauty industries.
Graduates will be able to work in salons or establish their own businesses, tapping into Namibia’s fast-growing beauty and clothing sector.

Chancellor John Fernando Kaushiwetu said the Beauty Hub will serve as a practical training ground for cosmetology students while also supporting local beauticians by providing access to high-quality tools and equipment on a pay-per-customer basis.

“This model allows salon owners and beauticians to serve their clients effectively without the burden of investing in expensive equipment. Many young professionals struggle with rent and the cost of tools, which limits their ability to compete with larger salons. The Hub bridges this gap by empowering them to deliver quality services and increase their income potential,” Kaushiwetu said.

He added that community members and visitors often face challenges in finding reliable beauty services.

“NIST Beauty Hub is an innovation in educational training and community empowerment. It creates a collaborative space where beauty professionals can access the tools they need, while offering customers a wide range of reliable services locally,” he said.

The facility includes five barbershop workstations, 11 hairdressing stations, two-foot massage stations, three washing stations, eight nail stations, two make-up stations and 15 hair drying/blow stations.

It will be operated by three instructors, one production manager and 10 departmental supporters, creating 14 new jobs.

Board chairman Vinsent Kanyetu described the launch as a milestone for the institution.

“Today is a historic moment in the life of our institution. We are an institution that believes in turning words into action. This launch demonstrates our commitment to our vision,” he said.

NIST, registered and accredited with the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) and Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA), already offers a variety of technical courses at its Ndama campus, including hospitality and wholesale and retail.
