ONGWEDIVA – The family of Salom Nicanor (41), who was allegedly killed and had his genitals cut off by a 25-year-old soldier who was reportedly his friend, is seeking assistance from the public to enable them to bury him this week.
Despite information that Nicanor was registered for a funeral policy by the accused friend, the family says they have not received any money.
“We don’t even know the value of the policy,” said his aunt.
Speaking to New Era yesterday, Nicanor’s aunt, Jacobina Adnel, said that last week the family of the accused visited their homestead.
“Maybe they are still coming on board to assist. Since the first day of mourning, we haven’t received anything from them,” she said.
The accused, Andreas Sunday Kanyanga, appeared before the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court last week. Kanyanga was denied bail, and the case was postponed to 18 June 2026. Last week at court, the family also said they want their son to be buried with his genitals and called on the court not to grant bail to the accused. Nicanor’s body was discovered in a sewage pond in Ondangwa last week.
Police confirmed that the accused had registered the victim for a funeral cover and intended to claim the money after his death.
Police did not disclose the value of the funeral cover.
Investigations are ongoing.
Following the arrest, police questioned the accused and escorted him to his homestead, where the burnt and buried remains were found.
Speaking to this publication, a family member to the deceased said the family was shocked, as the suspect and the victim were inseparable.
“They used to go out drinking together. They had good communication and unity. We cannot believe this incident,” she said. She further alleged that the suspect may have bought alcohol for the victim to make him drunk and defenceless.
