By Staff Reporter OPUWO The Opuwo Police are investigating several housebreaking and theft cases which took place over the weekend. Topping the investigation list was a burglary and theft on Friday night when unknown thieves broke into a prominent cell phone trading store known as Mobile Tech and made off with more than 28 cell phones valued at N$34ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 200,76. The police report in their crime bulletin that the thieves may have used a very strong unknown instrument to break down the door after cutting off the burglar bars. So far nobody has been apprehended in connection with the theft, and police are still investigating. In another incident the same Friday night, thieves are believed to have used a cutting torch to cut through the zinc roof of the First National Bank. However, nothing was stolen. In incidents that are rare in this western part of the country, thieves struck again over the weekend. On Saturday a theft was reported to have taken place at around 20h00 at the Oreness Camping Site in Opuwo when burglars entered the tent of visiting tourists who were camping. They stole cash, personal documents, bags, toiletries and a digital camera. Five suspects were arrested on Sunday morning in connection with the case and items such as toiletries, a passport, a black bag, a French booklet, a Navy card and Euro coins were recovered, among other items. However, the digital camera has not yet been recovered, and police investigations are continuing. In a case of a different kind, five inmates from the Opuwo holding cells escaped from custody after they managed to cut through the burglar bars of the roof of the holding cell. The names of the escapees are Maritjituri Hembinda (24), Tjitjinda Kapi (27), Johannes Tjindukutu (27), Ngurije Tjituezu aged (18), and Tjondombe Tjindumba (30). Tjindunda and Hembinda were re-arrested the same day, but the three others are still at large. A case of arson was reported in Fransfontein in the Khorixas area when a 42-year-old Namibian male, Isaskar Gurirab, was arrested after he set fire to the room his wife had been renting. It is alleged that the culprit had had a quarrel with his wife after he returned home under the influence of alcohol from a close informal location. He allegedly assaulted his wife before she managed to run away. He then resorted to burning the room, from which nothing was recovered. The suspect was arrested the same day, and the case is being investigated further.
