Nored employees at Katima stage peaceful demonstration

KATIMA MULILO – Employees of the Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (Nored) here, staged a peaceful demonstration outside the offices of the company yesterday morning. Sanctioned and facilitated by the Mineworkers Union of Namibia, the employees registered “deep dissatisfaction in the manner labour issues are handled within the company, particularly by the management” under the leadership of Acting Chief Executive Officer Lukas Kudumo Siremo.
In the petition that was read by Francis Silumbu, the employees allege that the acting CEO publicly promised them a 6 per cent wage increment but to date this promise was not fulfilled.
“This promise has not been honoured. This breach of commitment has caused serious demoralisation among the workforce and demonstrate a lack of seriousness and accountability in addressing employees’ welfare,” stated the employees in the petition.
They further petition that their wages are not aligned with market related standards in the energy and utility sector.
“While the cost of living continues to rise sharply, employees are left behind with wages that do not reflect their skills, experience or the standards of the industry. This neglect places Nored staff at a disadvantage compared to counterparts in similar institutions and creates a sense of exploitation.

This has been ongoing for far too long,” they charged.
Additionally, employees claimed they lack safety equipment while they are exposed to hazardous working conditions “which shows a disturbing disregard for [the] lives and wellbeing of workers”.
“The conduct of Siremo since taking office borders on someone not fit and proper to occupy the position,” they alleged.
They have made several demands including an immediate 6 per cent wage increment; a comprehensive review and adjustment of salaries reflective of the rising cost of living and an immediate strengthening of occupational health and safety protocols, as well as training.
The staff urged the management to act in good faith and adhere to agreements made, adding failure to address their concerns will leave them with no option but to pursue legal avenues to protect their rights, dignity and safety.
Manager at the Nored Katima Mulilo office, Sylvester Chaka received the petition and promised to forward it to the relevant office.
