The popular Namibia Tennis Association’s (NTA) club league continued at the Central Tennis Club Courts in the capital last weekend and produced some exciting adrenaline-pumping clashes in both the men and the women’s second division.

In the men’s 2nd division, NUST University team leapt into 2nd spot on the log table after their 13-7 match point victory over CTC 2B, while last year’s champions CTC 2A consolidated their top spot with a 15-5 match point triumph against UNAM.

In the women’s 2nd division, OTB ladies won all match points against the NUST student team and in the men’s division NUST top gun Socrates Muyambo beat CTC B’s Ronaldo Uriab 6-4, 6-4, while Colin Nyandoro shrug off some stiff resistance from CTC2 B’s Lawrence Kahindi.

Losing the first set, Nyandoro took the points for NUST winning 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in three sets.
In the doubles, CTC2-B had luck to thank for as the pair of Danai Muyambelo and Kyalo Kitheka won against Robert Riethmueller and Miguel Valleyo Orti 6-2, 6-4.

In the remaining doubles, NUST Muyambo and Nyandoro defeated Muyambelo and Kitheka 6-2, 6-4, while CTC 2-B’s combination of Kahindi/Uriab came out tops in their battle against Riethmueller and Valleyo Orti 6-1, 6-0.

In the second men’s league match, the reinforced CTC2-A outfit took 15 from possible 20 match points against a strong UNAM side. Leading Under-18 junior player Dantago Gino Gawanab defeated UNAM’s Eno Akpabio 7-6, 6-4, while Risto Shikongo saw off Martin Koroma 6-4, 6-4.

The UNAM combination of Patrick Paulus and Kudzai Gangayi enjoyed the upper hand against CTC2-A Samson Kaulinge and Hillary Charuma winning 3-6 and 6-4, having to come from a 5-points down to finally win the deciding tie break 11-9 (champion tie break).
CTC2-A junior players Gawanab and Shikongo defeated Paulus and Gangayi 6-2, 6-1, but the UNAM team of Akpabio and Koroma defeated CTC2 A Charuma and Kaulinge in straight sets.

However, matches in the women’s 2nd division registered a one-sided result with OTB claiming a maximum of 60 match points against the clearly out-of-sorts NUST student rookies, who could only manage to amass 10 game points.

Lena Brinkmann defeated Jana Klindworth 6-1, 6-0, while Javaneh Azadeh beat Salome Nguaiko 6-2 and 6-3. OTB’s Nicky MacNamarara and Debbie Rowles won 6-0 and 6-1 against the combination of Stefanie Giarises and Natalia Kupebona. In the last doubles, Brinkmann and Azadeh won 6-0, 6/1 against Garises and Kupembona.

NTA League action resumes on September 10 and promises a variety of exciting matches in both the men 2nd and women’s 1st and 2nd divisions.
