Local tennis players will this coming weekend have their last opportunity to accumulate maximum points as the quest to qualify for the much-anticipated Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) Masters tournament continues.
This coming weekend will see the country’s top players strutting it out for points and prestige at the NTA Senior Tournament, which will take place in the capital.
The senior tournament will serve as a qualifier event for this year’s NTA Masters event, slated for November.
According to NTA’s junior tennis committee chairperson Santie van der Walt, the masters is the biggest national tournament, which sees Namibia’s foremost players contesting for the ultimate prize.
Saturday’s event, she said, will serve as the last opportunity for players to amass more points and hopefully qualify for the grand event.
“We have more players who want to partake in the masters – and now, they will have a chance to fight it out for points this weekend and hopefully for a place at the coming masters. The NTA’s senior competition allows players to be ranked and also amass more entry points.
“With the local tennis scene growing by the day, we expect all top players from all corners to come out and showcase their talents. The country has many players who are working hard to put their names out there, so this is a big opportunity for them. The masters also reward good money to the winners; therefore, everyone looks forward to it,” she said.
In terms of preparations, she said logistics around the competition are all in place, as they wait on the day of the competition.
“We are ready; we are expecting players from across the country – and we are hoping for the best event this weekend. So far, the interest is so high, and we will have players competing in the singles and doubles.”
