Founding President Sam Nujoma’s former senior special assistant John Nauta said the late Nujoma cared for the people who worked for him and protected them all the time. This was because he understood their background.
Nauta, who retired in 2019, told Nampa on Sunday that Nujoma did not allow his staff, despite their educational background, to be mocked.
“If you mocked people because they did not have a good education, you would not get along well with him. He was very protective because he knew why they could not obtain the type of education other people got,” he said.
Nauta said Nujoma’s staff members were mostly people who were in Luanda and Lusaka with him.
“He loved kids, and he loved education. He was always encouraging his staff. He would at times sponsor them to pursue certain courses,” he recalled.
He described how tender-hearted Nujoma was towards those who were not fortunate to get an education during the liberation struggle.
He encouraged them to take up skills such as tailoring.
“We must remember comrade Nujoma as one of the Pan-Africanists, one of the strategists, and a thinker. I would say he’s an educationist as well,” Nauta stressed.
Nujoma (95) died in a hospital in Windhoek on Saturday.
