NUNW Congress – Swapo Relations Not an Issue

By Kuvee Kangueehi Windhoek The acting Secretary General of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) Evilastus Kaaronda says affiliation of the federation to the Swapo Party will not be an agenda item at the upcoming congress. Despite acknowledging that affiliation has caused tension and infighting within the union, Kaaronda said the Congress would not discuss the issue. “Of course the politics of the Swapo party have at times spilled over to the Union and undermined some of the duties of the workers’ movement, but the issue will not be on the agenda.” He noted that an accord was reached between Swapo and the Union or the NUNW to be an affiliate and the congress has no mandate to break that accord. “The union will need to sit down with the party to discuss the issue.” He added that some of the possible items on the agenda would be the new labour act and the economic situation in the country. Kaaronda further noted that the agenda would be finalised by the Central Committee when they meet middle of March. The much anticipated NUNW congress is slated for April 28 to May 1 at the Windhoek College of Education. He noted that planning for the congress is going smoothly and no major hiccups have been reported so far. The acting SG however said the affiliates have been slow in forwarding the names of delegates to the congress. He said this should be done in advance, as delegates need to be screened and accredited. “We have also not received the names of the nominees but it is customary that the affiliates keep the cards close to the chest until the final week.” Kaaronda however refused to comment on the court case of the expelled former Secretary General Peter Naholo. “The case is now in the High Court and will hopefully be concluded on Monday.” Approximately 400 delegates are expected to attend the NUNW congress, which will elect a president, first vice president, second vice president, secretary general, vice secretary general, treasurer and vice treasurer.
