The Okahandja Mayoral Cup, which took place this past weekend, was branded a success as various teams emerged victorious in various codes, ranging from volleyball, football, netball and athletics, staged at Nau Aib Stadium over the weekend.

In the volleyball category, the Namibia Defence Force’s (NDF) 21 Brigade took the top honour award after defeating the 4th Artillery from the NDF with a 3-2 scoreline.

The volleyball champion took home N$5 000, a trophy and 12 gold medals, whereas runners-up 4th Artillery walked away with N$3 000 and 12 silver medals.

The MPSH football team is the winner of the Mayoral Cup after stunning Google FC 3-1 in the final.

In addition to the trophy, MPSHS pocketed N$10 000 and 23 gold medals, with Google FC settling for N$6 000 and 23 silver medals as the runners-up.

In the netball final, the All Blacks ladies clinched victory over Blue Water by 37 goals to 26, and took home N$7 000, a trophy and 12 medals.

Runners-up Blue Water pocketed a cash prize of N$5 000 in addition to 12 silver medals.

In the Tug of War, Opuwo Town Council demonstrated their strength and prevailed over NDF TE, and the host Okahandja Municipality in second and third place, respectively.

The team from the Kunene region was awarded N$2 500 plus a trophy, whereas NDF TE took home N$1 500 in cash prize money.

Okahandja-based long-distance runner Gotlieb Awene scooped the first position in the 5-kilometre run and took home a trophy plus a cash prize of N$1 000.

Awene was followed by Ndinyando Johannes Dimbu from Karibib in second place, who pocketed home N$500 and a silver medal.

The regional sports officer for Okahandja constituency, Mara Pack Kandjiriomuini, who spearheaded the Mayoral Cup, said the tournament went as planned.

“This was a municipal tourney, and the payment issue to the winning teams is sorted systematically,” said Kandjiriomuini.

She further advised the hosting authority to have the cash to avoid pressure from the travelling teams.

“Other than that, the purpose of the competition was achieved, and it brought fruits to our garden town,” concluded the sports officer.
