The office of the Okahandja mayor, in collaboration with the regional sports office, will hold a sports competition at Nau Aib Stadium on Saturday.

About 12 teams registered to participate in football, netball, volleyball, tug of war, a fun walk and a 10-kilometre walk in the garden town.

Speaking to New Era Sport, Mara Pack Kandjiriomuini, who is the regional sports officer for Okahandja, said the competition is primarily aimed at raising funds to improve the sports facilities in Okahandja.

“This tournament will also contribute to the development of the sport within our region because sports grounds are where talents are displayed and groomed,” she said.

Kandjiriomuini, who is also one of the event coordinators, added that the mayor’s office will also use the funds raised to assist with the difficulties facing other communities.

“Okahandja has two stadiums, the Nau Aib and Liverpool Stadium – and if upgraded to a high standard, the Windhoek teams will use these venues due to challenges in the capital, and that will be one of the ways to generate revenue for our garden town,” she alluded.

The competition draw is slated for tomorrow at the Nau Aib stadium, where teams will be divided into groups as per various codes and will be played in a robin-based format.

“We will kick off with our games at 07h00 on Saturday, and finals are expected to end Sunday. Punctuality will be the key throughout this competition,” highlighted the coordinator.
