OKAHAO – A gala dinner to discuss development at Okahao was held at the town last Friday. The office of the mayor organised the event that saw over 100 business people and heads of various institutions attend.
Although it was not part of the agenda of the gathering, N$29 000 was raised for the construction of a maternity shelter at the town.
“The shelter will accommodate expecting mothers, who are currently housed in a corrugated iron structure provided by the Okahao Town Council some years ago,” explained Onesmus Shigwedha, the Local Economic Development and Tourism Officer at the Okahao Town Council this week.
Furthermore, it was suggested at the gathering that the town council should, among others, invest in a sports field, a playground and tarred roads.
Local businessman Sion Sheehama reminisced over the town’s lack of development in the past and applauded business people who had laid the development foundation at the town. He also heaped praises to the Okahao Town Council for the infrastructure that has been constructed at the town.
Sheehama further urged other business people to appreciate the town council’s efforts.
He also urged the town council to avail more land to business people in order to accelerate development at the town.
Mayor of Okahao, Isai David Uuzambala told the gala dinner that suggestions would be analysed to see what work should be implemented immediately.
“Council is ready to award any available work (contracts) to its local businesses. Let us just put our businesses in order when it comes to resources and quality service delivery,” Uuzambala said.
Salomon Uutoni, a councillor at the Okahao Town Council, said the council, investors and consumers play a pivotal role in developing the town.
Uutoni said women who are in business should be supported and assisted where possible.
“Women should also take the lead by assisting each other whether in elections or in business,” further suggested Uutoni.
Uutoni added that he is impressed when he sees female entrepreneurs engaged in upholstery, boiler-making and motor mechanics.
