The Okalongo Constituency Councillor Laurentius Iipinge, with the assistance of the business community, on Monday provided shelter to two destitute families.

Iipinge came to the rescue of the two families wallowing in poverty. They lived under deplorable conditions in dilapidated homes where they were exposed to wind, rain and dust.

Iipinge said he discovered the two families during his familiarisation visit to various centres in the constituency.
He added that it was critical to assist the two families as they really needed the shelter especially because of the rains.

“We have quite a few people living in poverty, but the two families’ conditions were critical and they needed assistance immediately,” added Iipinge.

The donation comprised of corrugated zinc sheet rooms, beds, mattresses and blankets.

One of the beneficiaries is Sakaria Noni from Epyaliwa north of Okalongo settlement. The 54-year-old Noni is an ex-convict who has been living in depravity and relying mostly on community handouts to provide for his three children aged ten, seven and six.

Noni said that he needed a place to shelter his children because when he was released from prison his wife had remarried and relocated to Grootfontein.

“My children do not even attend school because they have no birth certificates,” lamented Noni.
Another recipient, 47-year-old Ndakondjelwa Nakuyala relocated to Ouholondema village from Omatavida in search of accommodation three years ago.

Nakuyala has since been li-ving in her dilapidated home exposed to wind, rain and other natural elements and has been surviving on community handouts.

Nakuyala moved away from her family leaving her three children soon after her boyfriend died. Her family attempted to get her a home but she refused saying she likes her new home.

The two families expressed gratitude to the councillor and business community for coming to their aid.

A representative from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare also promised to facilitate the children’s registration so that they can get a grant.
