OSHAKATI – The fifth edition of the Okapya Annual Soccer Tournament is set to take place at the Eleven Morning Stars Sport Field in Ondangwa from 21 to 24 December.
Tournament organiser, Sandroa Ithana told Nampa that it has become a tradition for them to bring football fans together to enjoy great football.
“This is done to lower the crime rate and keep young people occupied over the holiday season,” he said, adding that teams from elsewhere can also use the tournament as a platform to scout for players.
Ithana said they will be hosting two categories, one for the youth and one for veterans, over the four days.
The winner in the youth category is expected to walk away with N$12 000, a floating trophy, gold medals, and a football kit.
The second runner-up will receive N$6 000, silver medals, and kits, and the team in third place gets N$3 000 and bronze medals.
Meanwhile, the winner of the veteran category will walk away with N$5 000, gold medals, a floating trophy, and a soccer kit.
The second-place winner will receive N$3 000, silver medals, and football kits, while the third-placed team will receive N$2 000 and bronze medals.
Ithana added that they are also giving SMEs a platform to sell their products during the tournament, with stalls available for N$500. The Helao Nafidi Legends from Helao Nafidi were the veteran champions of the 2022 tournament, while Omandindi FC from Windhoek won the youth category.
