Okongo library opens doors

Constructed for N$4 million, the Okongo Community Library has opened its doors, offering educational resources, internet access and research facilities.

It will promote literacy and lifelong learning.

The library initially operated from a community-owner structure under an agreement between the education ministry and the Okongo community.

The library is situated in the centre of the Okongo settlement behind Build It in the Ohangwena region.

Speaking to New Era, chief librarian Katrina Shikuni stressed that despite its critical role in the community, the library faces challenges, particularly a limited collection of books and insufficient computer resources.

She added that the library remains an essential institution in Okongo, fostering intellectual, cultural and social growth.

“It provides access to educational resources, free internet and specialised tools for research. The library also supports job-seekers and encourages literacy and lifelong learning, promoting personal and community development. As a safe and inclusive space, it ensures equitable access to resources for all members of the community, regardless of socio-economic status,” she said.

The library functions as a neutral and welcoming space, where community members can meet, collaborate and exchange ideas.

Shikuni said the community provided the building, and the ministry supplied staffing and resources.

However, the increasing demand for library services led to the construction of a modern facility, designed to better serve the community’s growing needs.

“It provides a wide array of services, including book-lending, with a collection of fiction and non-fiction titles for both adults and children. It also offers free use of computers for internet browsing and digital work, 24/7 wireless internet as well as facilities for printing, photocopying, laminating and scanning,” she stated.

She added that basic computer skills training is offered.

“Professional librarians are on hand to assist with research, finding resources and answering queries.

The library features quiet zones for individual study, group reading areas, and meeting rooms for community gatherings or workshops. For children, the library hosts programmes designed to promote literacy and education through reading activities and other engaging experiences,” she remarked.

The library operates from Monday to Friday from 9h00 to 16h30.

The new library is yet to be officially inaugurated.

The decision to open it was to meet public demand.

Shikuni invites the people of Okongo to fully utilise its resources, and stay connected and up-to-date by following the library’s activities and announcements on its Facebook page.
