The annual Old Wheelers Show will take place on Saturday in the capital, when a number of classy old cars will again be shown off.
Young and old alike will be able to marvel at the splendour of restored veteran and vintage cars, from a 1925 Dodge which is the oldest registered car in Namibia, and a 1938 Buick with its deep-seated comfort and striking chrome grille, to the durable and trusted 1948 Fargo ‘utility’.
The diminutive Goggomobile from when Rock ‘n Roll was in, and old wheelers from the seventies not converted to taxis yet, will be another attraction.
Besides viewing all the classic old cars, other entertainment includes the ‘Beetles’ corner, and an agriculture exhibition including old tractors and stationary engines. The ‘Full Monty’ includes a jumping castle, a quiz and face-painting for children, raffle ticket sales, scrumptious food and refreshing beverages along with OWC (Old Wheelers Club).
T-shirts and caps will also be on sale at reasonable prices in the information tent.
The event takes place at the OWC erf in Stadium Street, opposite the turnoff to the Safari Hotel, from 11h00 onwards.
The highlight of the day will be the raffle-draw, with the winner taking delivery of a 1966 Jaguar MK11 3.8S, in running condition.
Tickets @ N$75 each will be sold prior to and on the BIG DAY. Make this a memorable day for family and friends alike!
The sponsors Standard Bank Vehicle and Asset Finance have for the year supported the efforts of the club, in preserving a moment in the history of old wheelers.
DJ 69 sets the scene for good, wholesome entertainment from 12h00 until the ‘dust settles’.
OWC membership application forms, photographs, stickers and the August 2007 edition of the ‘Old Wheelers Rag’ will be available at the information tent.
Radio Cosmos 94.1 FM will conduct a live broadcast from 09h00 until 11h00, with the NBC (German Service) following on until 13h00.
The main aim of the Old Wheelers Club of Namibia is to preserve, and encourage the restoration of, vehicles older than 20 years, since year of manufacture.
There are 160 cars registered with the club at present and all members with authentically rebuilt vehicles are issued with a certificate and badge of authenticity.
The club continues to attract new members, and is serious about its commitment to preserving the country’s classic car heritage.
An executive committee is elected annually to oversee all activities, financial management and continued development of this singular institution.
Rallies and fun outings are planned well in advance, with members receiving e-notices and the quarterly ‘Old Wheelers Rag’ newsletter, which can be viewed on its website at www.oldwheelers.com.
For further details regarding club activities, please phone Eric Detering @ 081 124 3993 or Wolfgang Stehn @ 081 127 8969.
So if you have a car older than 20 years you can connect with some serious collectors and enthusiasts and who knows, you may just become OWC member # 485, the beginning of life ‘in the slow lane’. For peace of mind, ample security personnel will be on duty, within the demarcated expo area.
If you are a visitor or whether an enthusiast come and have a look at this unique automobile event as ‘something out of the ordinary’. Be there or be square.
