At least 15 people have drowned in Omusati region since January this year. The spate of drownings has resulted in regional police chief Commissioner Titus Shikongo issuing a renewed warning about water safety.
Shikongo has cautioned the public to steer clear of deep water, further advising the public not to cross water while under the influence of alcohol.
“We advise the public not to cross water while they are under the influence of alcohol and unaccompanied. Children must not be left unsupervised while herding livestock and parents should continuously warn children about the dangers associated with playing in the water,” said Shikongo.
In the recent incident, a 38-year-old man is suspected to have drowned while checking on his fishing nets in a river channel at Omundjalala village in the Elim constituency.
Kleopas Amagulu is alleged to have gone missing on Tuesday morning, and his body was discovered by boys herding livestock in the afternoon in the same village.
“His lifeless body was found floating in the water at Omundjalala village by small kids who were herding animals,” said Shikongo.
His next of kin has been informed. The commissioner also said the region has recorded 15 suicides since the beginning of the year. – nashipala@nepc.com.na
