Two-time champions Omusati Region are preparing to make a strong impact at this year’s Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup. The side previously won the national youth tournament in 2014 and again in 2024 when the event was hosted in Gobabis.
The 2026 edition is scheduled to take place in Keetmanshoop, in the //Kharas region, from 3 to 5 April, where the country’s top regional youth teams will compete for top honours.
As part of their preparations, Omusati held trials last month before trimming the squad to its final selection.
Head coach Shipena Nakalondo expressed confidence in the players selected, citing their commitment and readiness for the competition.
Despite being drawn in a challenging group alongside defending champions Kunene region, Nakalondo remains optimistic about his team’s chances.
“We respect every team in the competition, including the defending champions, but we are focused on our own game. The boys are ready and we are going there to compete and give our best,” he said. Nakalondo also emphasised the significance of such tournaments in developing young talent and thanked the sponsors for their continued support.
“We are grateful to Nedbank Namibia for providing this kind of platform for young players to showcase their talent. Opportunities like these are important for the growth of football in the country,” he added.
Omusati will be looking to draw on their past success and experience as they aim to reclaim the title and further strengthen their reputation as one of the country’s top youth football regions. -newsroom@nepc.com.na
