Ondangwa’s Namibia Correctional Service (NCS) team proved to be a force to be reckoned with as they successfully defended their Doc Tournament title when they beat NDF Raptors 3-1 in the final in Swakopmund over the weekend.
NCS captain Anthony Likando said they felt no intimidation from their opponents, as they are the best volleyball team.
The tournament, now in its 40th year, was organised by the Namibian Volleyball Federation (NVF) with Bank Windhoek as a primary sponsor, and took place at The Dome.
It featured 35 teams competing in the men’s and women’s categories, showcasing the talent and dedication which have been the hallmarks of the federation’s success over the years.
Youthful Unam Queens also put up a thrilling show when they outplayed Kudos 3-1 in the women’s final.
Queens’ captain Petite Elizabeth Kavenambutako said playing in the final for the first time was a remarkable opportunity. “Winning the tournament for the first time means we have made history for our club and the overall tournament, which will always be remembered.”
The winners walked away with N$20 000. The runners-up received N$15 000. The third prize was N$10 000, the fourth was N$5 000, and N$2 000 for the fifth place.
Players of all ages and skill levels participated, highlighting the inclusive and welcoming nature of the sport.
This year’s tournament attracted 487 players, with the youngest being Ndinelago Amakali (13) and Matheus Nahenda (15) in the women’s and men’s categories.
Lameesh Harris of the University of Namibia (Unam) Queens and Vaino Namukomba of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) Raptors were recognised as the most valuable players of the tournament in the women’s and men’s categories, respectively.
The tournament is one of the oldest in the country, and attracted close to 750 spectators. Families, friends and volleyball fans filled the stands, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere throughout the event.
NVF president Hilary Imbuwa said volleyball is a unifying force in the community, bringing people together and fostering a love for the sport.
‘‘This tournament was a fitting way to celebrate our achievements, and we look forward to a bright future. We are grateful to everyone who participated, volunteered and contributed to making this event such a success,’’ added Imbuwa.
NVF first vice president Liina Matheus said the federation is excited about the future of volleyball, and is committed to providing opportunities for players of all ages to participate and excel in the sport.
Bank Windhoek’s Strategic Communications Manager Samuel Linyondi said the bank was delighted to have witnessed thrilling competitive volleyball action this Easter weekend.
“There were many young players and spectators. The turnout signals that the development of volleyball is heading in the right direction. Congratulations to the NVF and all the participating teams for putting up a spectacular volleyball event,’’ he added.
