OSHAKATI – The Ondangwa Town Council has expressed concern over the increasing vandalism of street and road regulatory signs within the town.
The council warned that the acts pose safety risks to road users and place unnecessary financial burden on the local authority.
In a media release on Tuesday, the council said regulatory signs are essential traffic control instruments used to direct road users on what is permitted or prohibited under certain conditions.
“These include stop signs, speed limit signs, parking signs and other signage regulating behaviour in public spaces, such as streets, parking areas, parks and beaches. The disregard or destruction of such signs constitutes a violation of the law and is punishable accordingly,” the media release said.
The council added that road signs play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of traffic, warning that, when they are vandalised, defaced or removed, they create dangerous situations for road users.
