RUNDU – A bus carrying 64 passengers veered out of control after it ran over a cow and collided with an oncoming vehicle, instantly killing one girl and injuring several other Windhoek-bound passengers.

All 63 passengers were rushed to the health centre a few kilometres from the accident scene and 33 were transferred to the Rundu intermediate hospital as they were said to be in a serious condition. The bus belonging to Trans Zambezi Runner was travelling to Windhoek from Katima Mulilo.

The injured included its owner, three crew members, among them the driver, and five Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) nationals.

“Only one died in the accident,” confirmed Inspector Hendricks Mulele the spokesman for the police for Kavango East. The accident occurred in the early evening hours at around 18h00. The VW Golf that was side-swipped by the trailer pulled by the bus  experienced minor scratches and its driver escaped unhurt.

Speaking to New Era, the acting primary medical officer at Andara hospital, Dr Mulolo Mapumba, said many of the accident victims have since been discharged.

“They are now in a stable condition,” said Mapumba, who added that of the 33 passengers rushed to Rundu, 11 were discharged while 22 were admitted overnight. He said the condition of the 22 passengers admitted in Rundu was stable.
